Greetings and “Selamat Datang ke FSKSM”

Welcome to the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Systems at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).  The faculty is the pioneer faculty of computer science in the country that offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Started in 1978 as a department, we have been offering computer science education and services for more than 30 years.

The Faculty of Computer Science and Information Systems which is also known as FSKSM for short is one of the country’s premier institutions for computer science education and research.  The faculty is organized as five academic departments: systems and communication, software engineering, graphics and multimedia, information systems and industrial computing. We are home to more than 160 academic staff, 770 graduate students, and 1200 undergraduates.

The Faculty aspires to be a centre of excellence in computer science education at all level.  We have been actively developing and revising our undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum to fulfill the requirements of international and national standards and our stakeholders.

At undergraduate level, we offer six programs leading to Bachelor’s degrees. The program prepares students to be academic and industry leaders who are capable of applying computer science principles and technology across a wide variety of fields. We have been producing graduates in the field of computer science for the last two decades and many have shown impressive records of employment.

At postgraduate level, we offer research-oriented and professional master programs, and multiple PhD programs. Our master programs can be classified as full research, mixed mode and taught course. For many years we have been offering PhD in computer science, which is a fully research mode program.  Starting 2009, we offer two new PhD programs. The first is PhD in Information Systems, a new program for PhD candidates pursuing research in the areas of Information Systems. The second is the Doctoral of Software Engineering, a new program designed for professionals working in industries.  Candidates are required to carry out research to produce innovative solutions for their workplace.

We strongly believe that the faculty’s vision to be a highly reputable computer science institution could only be achieved through our active engagement in research. Recently, we have organized ourselves into a number of research groups, which in turn supports a university-wide grouping, known as research alliances.  Our strategy is two-folds: developing strengths in a number of existing research areas and by exploiting Computer Science's unique opportunities for collaboration with other research groups at the University. The faculty received a number of grants to boost our research activities which translates into an increment in the number of research assistants and postgraduate students. The quality of research is manifested by the list of high impact and citation-index journals, patents and copyrights.

The faculty is providing our enrolled students not only with an exciting teaching and learning experience but also an enriching diversified multicultural environment.  The faculty is hosting both local students as well as foreign students at our premises.  At present 40 percents of our students are foreign students and they come from more than 30 countries.  These include Indonesia, Iran, Thailand, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Yemen, Chad, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Nigeria, Syria, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Turkey.

Please explore our web pages, find out more about our research, our renowned professors, our comprehensive academic programs, and research opportunities. Whether you are a prospective student, a potential industrial partner, a future research collaborator, an alumnus or friend, or just someone curious about computer science as a discipline, we're sure you'll find something of interest on our web site.
